Some of the most precious memories of my childhood were created in my grandmother’s garden.  Many a warm, summer morning, she and I would sit among the zinnias, sweet peas, and nasturtiums, as we picked vegetables and pulled weeds. The moist black mud seeped through the cracks of my toes, and flies buzzed lazily around our heads.  I loved the smells of the fuzzy tomato leaves and plump cantaloupes.

As we worked in the garden, we talked.  But the conversation wasn’t forced, and silence seemed natural. When we did speak, it was because we had something worth sharing. The routine tasks of shelling peas or digging potatoes provided a perfect setting for revealing previously unexpressed feelings. The friendly cat nuzzling my leg wasn’t surprised by my innermost thoughts.  The time spent with my grandmother in the garden was soothing and therapeutic.

These special memories are the inspiration for my pediatric mental health counseling practice, Becky’s Garden Therapy. I create for children a safe, healing atmosphere where they can share their hurts, fears and dreams.  I am a first hand witness to the nurturing power of Mother Nature. Together we will plant seeds, pull weeds, pick flowers, harvest vegetables, and explore the mysteries and charms of our Earth. I invite your child to join me in my garden!
