FAQs

What is garden therapy?

Garden therapy is a proven and effective form of counseling that uses plants and gardening activities to improve the social, educational, psychological and physical adjustment of a child. Garden therapy focuses on healing the body, mind and spirit. and abilities.

Where is garden therapy practiced?

Garden therapy is practiced in a number of settings: school systems, hospitals, botanic gardens, school recreation sites, special education facilities, group homes, elder care and mental health counseling practices.

Why should I choose garden therapy for my child?

Studies have shown that working outdoors and interacting with nature decreases levels of stress and anxiety.  This sense of peace and relaxation can help children face and confront their fears and frustrations. Their gardening work provides them with a stronger sense of  value and purpose. On an on-going basis, the child will gain immense satisfaction and a sense of pride from seeing the physical outcomes of their efforts parallel their own growth. Studies show that children are more likely to participate (and enjoy!) their therapy sessions when they are able to interact with nature and witness the results of their labor.

Is garden therapy available year round?

Yes! There are several activities involved in garden therapy that are not actually performed in the garden. For example, drying plants and flowers, flower arranging, container gardening, and much more.

What age group benefits from garden therapy?

All age groups can benefit from garden therapy; however, Becky’s clients are elementary school age children.
